Rio coal mine awarded for girl power initiative

A RIO Tinto coal mine has won the annual Resources Award for Women - Best Company Initiative for its efforts in recruiting women with no prior mining experience as mine vehicle operators.

The Queensland Resources Council awarded the miner’s Clermont Mine the accolade to recognise its efforts. Women make up more than 27% of the mine's workforce.

Clermont mine general manager Dave Lamb says the mine was active in encouraging women with no mining experience into non-traditional roles when it began compiling its operating workforce in 2008.

Lamb says the mine aims to provide opportunities for people who historically haven’t been able to enjoy the benefits associated with working in the mining industry.
