THE QUEENSLAND Resources Council (QRC) says the Queensland Government’s new ClimateSmart 2050 policy recognises the role coal will play in a low-emissions future.
The new climate change strategy, ClimateQ: Towards a Greener Queensland is an update of the 2007 document, ClimateSmart 2050. The document has been developed in light of the federal government's planned carbon pollution reduction scheme and renewable energy targets, it contains the latest science and projections.
QRC Chief Executive Michael Roche says that it is clear that Queensland needs to look hard at all the low-emission energy possibilities and Queensland is fortunate to have a number of low-emission energy options, including coal.
But until the testing and commissioning of new carbon capture and storage technologies for coal-fired power stations is complete, the new policy provides some welcome certainty about the community’s expectations for the performance of any new coal-fired power in Queensland.
In response to public interest in low-emissions technologies, QRC has prepared a video, available from its website, which describes what Queensland’s low-emission future might look like.
The video describes how Queensland will need energy from a mix of energy sources—solar, hydro, biofuels, gas and coal—and the technologies behind them.
