POLICE say four protesters have demonstrated against the expansion of BHP Billiton's Dendrobium coalmine in New South Wales.

The Climate Camp activists chained themselves to the coal mine’s conveyor belt.

The group says the protest is aimed at highlighting the impact the coal mine is having on the local environment.

NSW Greens MP Lee Rhiannon praised the direct intervention of the activists.

A police spokesperson says the group was taken to Wollongong Police Station and will likely be charged with trespass.
