Arrrow gets gas from ‘barren’ coal seams

ARROW Energy has announced that it has successfully extracted gas flows from the Fort Cooper Coal Measures tenements which were previously thought unsuitable for gas extraction in the Bowen Basin, Queensland.

The company says the surprise development may mean that it could be sitting on a substantial new Coal Seam Gas resource. It says it could be its greatest prospect.

Arrow Energy had thought the Fort Cooper Coal Measures project could be too difficult as the coal is banded, meaning its thickness is irregular which makes it hard to mine. The coal is also tighter, meaning it has lower gas permeability.

However, the company says a trial of a hydraulic drill, which fractures the coal to make the gas easier to extract, has yielded promising results.

The miner says while it is still early days for the project it claims very excited about the initial results from these first pilot wells
