Queensland engineering company lands Abbot Point contract

Monadelphous has landed a $76 million contract to expand the Abbot Point coal terminal in Queensland.

The company will help construct the stockyard and high-voltage infrastructure at the $818m project to bring overall throughput to 50Mt per year.

The port currently comprises a rail in-loading facility, coal handling and stockpile areas and a single jetty and conveyor connected to a berth and shiploader.

The company will upgrade the existing coal handling plant and install modifications to the power system as well as construct and commission new conveyors.

Monadelphous says the contract is its largest to date and will help the company increase its portfolio or large scale multi-disciplinary construction projects.

Construction will begin immediately with substantial completion to be seen by late 2009.
