Study into impact of coal mining on groundwater reserves commences

THE NAMOI Catchment Water Study Working Group has appointed consultants for a study into the impact of mining on groundwater reserves in the Namoi Catchment, New South Wales.

The group says the community is concerned exploration and coal mining in the region will cause significant damage to groundwater reserves.

Sceptics suggest because the aquifers are interconnected, mining in one sector of the plains may damage supplies many kilometres away.

The consultants have begun to establish the terms of reference for the study.
