QLD is keen to store coal-emissions

THE QUEENSLAND Parliament has passed a new legislation to fast track the development of greenhouse gas storage in the state.

The Greenhouse Gas Storage Bill would allow the safe storage of captured carbon dioxide from gas or coal-fired power plants underground in deep reservoirs well below the earth's surface.

Queensland Mines and Energy Minister says the move is a major step forward in delivering a cleaner, greener energy future for the State. He claims while we push ahead with renewable energy solutions and gas-fired power, coal will continue to play a role an important role in providing the power we need to get on with our daily lives.

Tarong Energy is working with the CSIRO on a pilot project which aims to capture greenhouse gases at the Tarong power station. It is said to have the potential to capture 1500t of carbon dioxide emissions a year.

Other groups including, CS Energy are in the process of developing technology which could be capable of cutting emissions from a typical coal-fired power station by 90%.
