NSW coal truck curfew sparks debate

THE NSW Greens are contesting calls from the Port Kembla Coal Terminal (PKCT) to lift a coal truck curfew in Wollongong.

The terminal is pushing for coal trucks to be run around the clock, as opposed to the 7:00am AEDT and 6:00pm curfew which is currently in place. If approved, the move could double the coal haulage through the Illawarra.

Greens’ MP, Lee Rhiannon, is pushing for a public inquiry into the issue and says the port has “downplayed opposition” to lifting the restriction.

Rhiannon says the community has concerns about noise and air quality, and she is urging the transport minister to speak out against ‘shoddy processes’ from the PKCT.

Transport Minister, David Campbell, has rejected calls for a public inquiry, and says the decision lies in the hands of the Planning Department.

The Department is currently completing assessments and will make a recommendation when all the information and issues at hand have been considered.
