Haystack Plain coal mine proposal on shaky ground

Haystack Plain coal mine proposal on shaky ground

PLANS for the controversial Haystack Plain coal mine plan could be scrapped if it can be shown it would interfere with flows into the Murray Darling Basin, Queensland.

Independent Federal MP Tony Windsor says the proposed mine development could be illegal under the recently passed Commonwealth Murray Darling Legislation.

The Haystack Plain is subject of a Mineral Development Licence to access coal deposits to supply the Tarong Power Station.

The proposed development could affect the Haystack Plain’s highly productive black soils and very low sloping floodplains.

The proposed open-cut mine is expected to produce up to 700 million tonnes of coal, with 150 million tonnes within 100 metres of the surface.
